Creating diverse and inclusive workplaces isn’t just a “nice” thing to do; Diversity positively impacts teams and, ultimately, results. A 2016 Gallup report found that companies that had more diverse teams also had 46% to 58% better financial performance than companies that were below the median.
Once the time and effort has been invested into building a multitalented, multifaceted A-team, they will not stay if they don’t feel valued, understood, and comfortable. That’s where inclusion—making employees feel valued, welcome and comfortable being who they are—comes in.

Sarah Claxton is a Senior Manager at ESB and has led the company’s strategy on Employee Engagement, Diversity and Internal Communications for the past six years. Her work has focussed on delivering an employee experience which facilitates and supports alignment of employee behaviours with the strategic direction of the business.
ESB has redefined it’s business strategy in the context of the societal need to address climate change and the central role electricity will play in realising a clean energy future. Through her role, Sarah has worked on the development of this strategy, which was carried out through the lens of purpose, and in the subsequent organisation redesign to enable ESB deliver on this ambitious strategy. The need for a values-led and inclusive culture enabling diversity and ultimately successful delivery of the business strategy is key to this.
Sarah holds a primary degree in Mechanical Engineering from DIT Bolton Street and a Master of Science in Work and Organisational Behaviour from DCU Business School. She Joined ESB in 1998 as a graduate engineer. Initially working in technical roles, she gravitated to line management, which led to her keen interest in understanding motivation and the role of purpose in the workplace.
